Updated: Nov 28, 2023

Shoulder part is the most flexible joint in our body, and given the number of everyday activities, it's involved in—from brushing your hair to reaching up into the cupboard.

Shoulder pain can be due to arthritis, tendonitis, and several other causes.

The shoulder consists of three bones—humerus, scapula, and clavicle. These bones are cushioned by a layer of cartilage. There are two main joints. The atrioventricular joint is between the highest part of the scapula and the clavicle. The glenohumeral joint is made up of the top, ball-shaped part of the humerus bone and the outer edge of the scapula. This joint is also known as the shoulder joint.

What causes shoulder pain?

A lot of factors and conditions can cause to shoulder pain. The most prevalent cause is

Rotator cuff injury, Shoulder Tendonitis 肩部肌腱炎

Rotator cuff tendinitis, or tendonitis, affects the tendons and muscles that help move your shoulder joint. If you have tendinitis, it means that your tendons are inflamed or irritated. Athletes playing sports that require lifting their arm over their head commonly develop rotator cuff tendinitis.

Frozen shoulder 肩周炎

Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition characterized by stiffness and pain in your shoulder joint. Signs and symptoms typically begin gradually, worsen over time and then resolve, usually within one to three years.

Osteoarthritis 骨性关节炎

Osteoarthritis of the shoulder is a gradual wearing of the articular cartilage that leads to pain and stiffness.

Traditional Chinese Medicine considers 3 reasons causes of shoulder pain.

1) Shoulder pain from lack of circulation in the Neck

The neck, shoulders, and arms share a few channels and when there is a lack of circulation to the neck the problem will affect the circulation in the arms and shoulders causing shoulder pain. This type of shoulder pain may also be combined with finger tingling or numbness.

2) Attack of the External problem (Wind & Cold)

In this case, the shoulder is being attacked by the cold or wind on the external problem.

For example like air-conditioning, fan no blanket whilst you sleep. This leads to an invasion of cold-causing stagnation in the channels around the shoulder and results in pain.

3) Blood Stagnation Due to Injury

This type of shoulder pain can be caused by a reduced flow in the circulation leading to stagnation of blood, such as from sports injuries, overuse of the shoulder or general injury. The pain will be sharp, fixed and feel deep within the shoulder. The pain may even occur while sleeping.
